To address the social and research challenges evolving from the COVID-19 pandemic, MCUAAAR and three other National Institutes of Health funded-Centers (MCCFAD, Pepper Center, and MADRC) that engage with community members to enhance research and advance the science of aging came together to learn from each other’s efforts, approaches, and communication with community partners. MCUAAAR/PRBA Summer Mentoring Program

May 31 – June 2, 2023

Application Deadline: April 3, 2023

The Michigan Center for African American Aging Research (MCUAAAR) and Program for Research on Black Americans (PRBA) are pleased to announce its 2023 Summer Mentoring Workshop for Advanced Doctoral Students on African American Research and Latinx Research. The virtual workshop will take place May 31 – June 2, 2023. Drs. Robert Joseph Taylor, Amanda Woodward, and David Cordova are the program faculty. The deadline to apply for the 2023 Summer Mentoring Program is April 3, 2023. This workshop emphasizes training in numerous areas including: 1) publishing in peer review journals, 2) writing grant proposals to the NIH, 3) the tenure process, 4) ethical conduct of research, 5) successful mentoring and collaborative relationships, and, most importantly, 6) how to navigate the academy. Dr. Reuben Jonathan Miller Named 2022 MacArthur Fellow!!!

Reuben J. Miller, PhD, a 2014 MCUAAAR Scientist, is an Associate Professor at Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice at the University of Chicago and a Research Professor at the American Bar Foundation. Dr. Miller was selected as a MacArthur Fellow for his work tracing the long-term consequences that incarceration and re-entry systems have on the lives of individuals and their families.

Lichtenberg, PhD, ABPP, FGSA, director of the Institute of Gerontology and the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute, as well as Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Wayne State University, has been installed as the new president of The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the nation’s largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the field of aging. He was elected by GSA’s membership, which consists of more than 5,500 researchers, educators, practitioners, and other professionals.
